On Thursday, October 26th, The University of California announced their plans for a new free speech center that focuses on the first amendment. It will be placed in the UC center in Washington, D.C.
Its official title will be The National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement. The application process for the center's fellowship program will open on November 9th. The center will research and advocate for First Amendment issues and will be funded by private philanthropic efforts as well as the UC Presidential Endowment.

Janet Napolitano
UC President Janet Napolitano has asked Avi Oved, a student at UCLA law school, to join the advisory board to address free speech issues on college campuses. Oved had this to say:
"Our government has retreated from their responsibilities to basic human rights and decency, so public education systems are feeling the responsibilities. The executive branch is disrupting what I have known to be the appropriate interpretation of the constitution"
Co-chairs and members of the advisory board will include Erwin Chemerinsky, the dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law, and former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer.
